Day by day our world is becoming a smaller place with the breakdown of geographic and economic barriers. To know and understand what people in other countries require it becomes imperative to understand their language. The language specialist therefore assumes great importance in bringing people together for economic and social benefits. The knowledge of a language proves to be an advantage in many professions.
CAREER PROSPECTS
Language proficiency is an added advantage in many professions but in some professions it is an additional requirement like travel agency, airlines, hoteliering, marketing etc. In some professions it is essential e.g. translators, interpretors, language teacher, foreign embassies and the U.N.O. Translators are also employed by the government, research organisations, intelligence organisations, airlines, export agencies, trade fair organisations and the service sectors. Some linguists also work part time.
DETAILS OF THE COURSE
To become a linguist one must have the aptitude to grasp a language.After 10+2 one could take a three year graduate degree (B.A.) or a five year integrated language course in a university. One could also learn a foreign language in a language institute run by embassies and consulates of foreign countries. Language courses can also be done part time. Students generally learn Japanese, Italian, German, Russian, Chinese, Spanish, Persian and Arabic.
